Sen. Mitch McConnell could return to the U.S. Senate later this month after spending much of the summer away from Washington while recovering from a fall, according to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer.
Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, said Thursday that McConnell’s staff has told him the senator’s goal is to be back on Capitol Hill when the Senate reconvenes on September 14.
“I expect that. I sure hope so,” Comer said when asked whether he expected McConnell to return at that time.
Comer made clear, however, that he has not spoken directly with McConnell. His information comes from conversations with members of McConnell’s staff, with whom Comer said he regularly communicates on matters involving Kentucky.
McConnell's Staff Has Not Confirmed a Return Date
While Comer offered an optimistic timeline, McConnell’s office has stopped short of confirming that September 14 will be his return date.
Stephanie Penn, a spokesperson for McConnell, told CNN on Wednesday that there were “no scheduling announcements at this time” when asked whether the senator had a planned date to return.
McConnell spokesman David Popp reiterated that position Thursday, referring CNN to the office’s latest statement.
That means September 14 should currently be viewed as an expected or hoped-for return date rather than a confirmed appearance.
McConnell Has Been Away From Washington Since June
McConnell, 84, was hospitalized on June 14. His office initially did not disclose the reason for his hospitalization, leading to weeks of questions about his health and when he might return to public life.
McConnell later revealed that a fall had resulted in his hospitalization.

After spending time in the hospital, the longtime Kentucky senator moved to a rehabilitation center as he worked to regain his strength.
On August 6, McConnell announced that he had been discharged from the rehabilitation facility and would continue recovering at home. He also said he planned to follow an intensive physical therapy program and remain engaged with his staff and colleagues on Senate business.

Senate Set to Reconvene September 14
The Senate is scheduled to return from its summer recess on Monday, September 14.
That date now carries additional significance because McConnell’s staff has reportedly told Comer that having the senator back when the chamber reconvenes is the goal.
